Helena Uambembe was born in 1994 in Pomfret, South Africa to Angolan parents who fled the civil war raging in their country. Her father was a soldier in the 32nd Battalion of a military unit within the South African Defence Force. This Force was mainly composed of Angolan black men.
The 32nd Military Battalion and the Angolan heritage received by Helena Uambembe are the predominant themes in the artist’s work. She explores these themes by connecting them with strong symbols and historical archive elements.
Helena Uambembe received the David Kolane Award in 2019.
Helena Uambembe est née en 1994 à Pomfret en Afrique du Sud de parents angolais ayant fui la guerre civile faisant rage dans leur pays. Son père était un soldat du 32ème bataillon d’une unité militaire au sein de la Force de Défense d’Afrique du Sud. Cette Force était principalement composée d’hommes noirs d’origine angolaise.
Le 32ème bataillon militaire ainsi que l’héritage angolais qu’a reçu Helena Uambembe sont les thèmes prédominants dans les œuvres de l’artiste. Elle explore ces thèmes en les connectant à des symboles forts et des éléments d’archives historiques.
